ASS3 - Project 5 - Diagrammatic Illustration

Giving Instructions

For this exercise, I have decided to do some step instructions on how to make a cup of tea. First I am going to get my sketchbook and write the step-by-step instructions on how I make a cup of tea and get some key ideas.

As you can see above, I have thought of some ideas in my sketchbook. I have looked at instructions on the Internet on how to make a cup of tea and there are some easy to understand and not so easy to understand examples:

I feel this diagram above is to minimalistic and really only shows three stages if there was someone who did not have a clue to make a cup of tea I feel they would struggle with understanding this illustration.

This one above is quite technical but I can understand it well and the process is easy to understand.

This one above only shows you what you need but not how you use them together to make a cup of tea.

I like the illustrations on this one as they are easy to understand with simple illustrations. There is little written text on there which shows the illustrations do the talking.

I have decided for this step-by-step illustration that I need 5 steps. They are:

  1.  Pour hot water into a cup
  2. Wait 3 mins to set the tea in the water
  3. Add milk and sugar
  4. Stir together
  5.  Finished cup of tea

I feel that these steps indicate clearly how to make a cup of tea. I am now going to sketch a few ideas and other ways I could show these steps, to create an understanding illustration with easy diagrams on how to make a cup of tea. In the exercise it mentions to use little or no words as possible and that the illustrations should demonstrate the process. I'm going to try as hard as I can to create an illustration with not many words but is also easy to understand.

As you can see above I have practiced in my sketchbook and come up with a few good ideas. The one I like the best where the  steam coming from the finish cup of tea at the bottom and putting bubbles of step-by-step instructions along the steam.  I am now going to try and sketch my idea and see how it comes across:

As you can see from the drawings above these are my quick illustration of how it is going to look. This would be a good example for visual mockup.
I have decided I want to use calming colours because when I have a cup of tea it's a sign of relaxing. I think cream and a darkish green (natural colour as tea is a natural substance) background colours would work well and make the bubbles stand out with the steps in. I have been practicing a little in Photoshop recently and have decided to give this a go in Photoshop to see what I can come up with.

Here above is a cup I created on Photoshop to start my illustration.

Today I had a little issue where I created the above illustration on Photoshop and it was going really smoothly. I saved to file and came back on the computer a few hours later and the file was corrupt, so I lost my work. It is frustrating as I thought I was doing a good job of it. I have left it for a day for me to come back to it and begin it again now.

Looking at it I feel that the steam needs to be more cream and the background needs to be more green and it is lacking colour which will make it more attractive.

After attempting again on Photoshop here now is my illustration so far today:

As you can see I have started putting the steps into the bubbles in the steam. I feel that this is looking really well and it will be easy to understand when it's finished.
One of the issues I can see whilst doing this illustration is that steam rises upwards so I am questioning myself if the steps need to start from the bottom by the cup and work upwards as steam rises or do I start from the top of the steam and work downwards towards the cup which is the finished produce? I am going to continue with my illustration from working top to bottom and then I am going to go onto the OCA illustration Facebook page and ask other students what they think of my design to see if they point out this issue that I feel may be quite a big problem.

Above is my finished final piece. I think it looks great it may need to be some tweaking with the directions as spoken about previously. However I think I have got a good idea here with the steps being in this team of the cup of tea. I am now going to go on Facebook and ask for other students opinions.

Talking to other students ended up being a great idea as I got some great feedback and help me to see what direction I needed to go in to make my illustration better please see the comments I received below:

Lola O'Shea I like it ðŸ˜Š. It's easy for me to understand and I like the way you made the steam tie all the pictures together.
Abi Pegg Love the style and colours. My only suggestion would be to show the tea bag going in the cup at the beginning. Really like how you've used the steam to link the images.
Hilbo Lawler Lovely layout, images are clear and colours work. Agree with Abi, an image showing teabag going into the cup would help.
Gemz Lees Thank you for your input. I gonna try n put a bubble in with the tea bag in xx ill show u when ive done it thank you for your help! Xxx

Cerian York Really beautiful. Although i put the water in before the milk xx
Cerian York I was reading it from the bottom up! Maybe some direction indication would help ? As steam travels upwards it feels natural to read it following the steam. Xx
Lindsey M Sheehan I wasn't sure whether to read up or down either - especially as steam rises from the pot I thought maybe it was bottom up. It took me a minute to understand 180's as well, maybe 3 mins with a skinny wedge on the clock would be clearer? Though no one else mentioned it so maybe it's just me
Abi Pegg I think 3mins would be clearer too. I don't drink tea so that bit was lost on me too lol
Gemz Lees thanks for all your input i have now done it again. do you think it looks better? and clearer?
Hilbo Lawler Excellent adjustment...much clearer
Abi Pegg It's brilliant!
Gemz Lees Thanks for all ur help xxxx
Gemz Lees Thank you xxxxx

As you can read from above, I was correct about the steam with the steps going downwards as steam rises and also that I ended up adding another step into my illustration showing putting the tea bag into the cup, as people thought it didn't look clear enough. Below is my final illustration. Also the time on the timer was confusing, so I changed it to say 3mins instead of 180 seconds.

Here is the finished illustration below:

Overall I think it looks great, I think it's easy to understand. I have had to use a little wording so people can understand my illustration and made it more clearer. I'm not happy with the style of my start text but it helps people to see what direction they need to go in.
My illustration OCA student friends seem to think it looked fine and I am glad that they mention to add another step in. Now my illustration looks more clearly and in a better composition with that extra bubble.
I think overall my illustration gives out easy instructions that you can follow at home, to create a lovely cup of tea. I found that I am beginning to get to use to Photoshop a bit more as I'm experimenting along with it.

Further Sketching and experimenting

Here below are some or sketches that I have done in the last week as well as doing my degree:

I really like Disney so sometimes I have a spurt to drawing the characters. I drawed the Beast on an A3 piece of paper using a HB pencil. I got a great amount of feedback from it on Instagram and I really enjoyed using a pencil to sketch the tones on to the character

Here above is a collage I did in my sketchbook just to play around with some pieces that I had floating about to see what I could create. I ended up making a college that kind of had a message about  getting married. I feel really pleased that I have created my first kind of college. I have done enjoyed making the college it is very experimental and very creative using your imagination. I like how I did the college and then use the pen to put the chain and ball on the bride's dress. The two hoops at the top indicate the marriage rings and obviously the white dove head, all are symbols of marriage.

Here above I found an animal magazine out and wanted to draw different animals eyes. I enjoy drawing them, It's the first thing I start doodling usually so I wanted to experiment with a few different tools and to create different skins and eyes I used coloured pencils, felt, paint and ink. I like the tiger's eye and the crocodile's I think I look very realistic.

Above is a sketch I tooked from a real life cheetah in a photo and then turned him into a cartoon personality character. I think he looks really cool and he looks as though he's thinking about food. I used a biro and pencil to create my sketch.

Above I sketched half woman half cat character.I was just playing around with a pencil doing different shapes and it ended up with this.

I then decided to try out some watercolor pencils to see how I get along with them. They don't look very well here but I did have fun using them and will try them out again. I like how you can colour it in then add water and the colour just comes out at you. It is a great way to fill in areas to create a smoother effect.

ASS3 - Project 4 - Abstract Illustration

Abstract Illustration

For this task, I have to listen music from certain artists and create marks which convey my intake and interpretation of the essence or mood of the piece.

I have got paper at the ready and rounded up a few items and tools to get stuck in and feel the music.

This should be fun!

George Gershwin - Rhapsody

The Gypsy Kings - Volare

  Beethoven - Fur Elise

Miles Davis - So What

George Gershwin - Summer Time

The Gypsy Kings - Balia Me

As you can see from above I created a few different images whilst listening to different types of music.

I really like the first one I did George Gershwin - Rhapsody, as it's colourful and I like the way I created abstract musical notes within the artwork. The music was very moving and this is how I expressed the rhythm.

The other one I like was  Miles Davies - So What,  this is because I enjoyed adding the extra bits of paper to add texture. It was very jazzy music and the colours I feel went well with the sound I heard and felt.

I didn't like my idea for the The Gypsy Kings - Volare, I feel it did not have much going for it and I was not too keen on the music I heard.

I have decided to go with George Gershwin - Rhapsody and Miles Davies - So What. I'm now going to get my L frame and zoom in on the areas I find interesting and then decide which one I want to blow up and create for the cover album.

I looked at each and chose an area where I feel would look like a great abstract piece of art for a CD cover.
Miles Davies - So What

George Gershwin - Rhapsody

After looking at the two areas I have decided that George Gershwin - Rhapsody abstract with the music note is more appealing to the eye than the other.

I like the colours and that is has an abstract music note. the lines and movement shows rhythm of the song I was listening to and the whole composition works well.

I am now going to create my image again on a bigger scale. here are a few examples of the area blown up I have done:

They are quickly drawn just so that I can get an idea of what I want to do and get the best out on my abstract idea. After looking at these I have decided to create it using layers of paper and some string to do the thinner lines of colour. By adding paper and string it will help to show the flow of rhythm. I have found the colours I feel suit my abstract work and I am going to begin to create my Cover.

Finished Image

Here above is my finished idea I had a lot a fun with experimenting with the paper and string and think I have succeeded in creating my abstract cover image well. I think the colours work together well and I love the black abstract musical note in the centre which is a great focal point. I feel it really describes the music really well. I also used a black pen and colour pencils to add a few marks to make it more interesting. I think by doing this it has helped it stand out more.

I decided to put it in photo shop and have a go at creating the CD cover:

I like what I have done here and it looks professional. My abstract image sends a message of rhythm and movement with in the music. I chose the font as it also shows that whispy curved lines, which dance with music to fit well together.

Sketch Book Extras

My tutor informed me to sketch more to improve my lines and become more confident. I decided to just get my pencil and pens and have a moment to doodle:

Some of the above doodle I took from life and others I used from my imagination. I t was great to just be sketch what ever I see and what comes in to my head. I think it showcases a good page of doodles.

I have been reading a book called the Artist's way as sometimes I feel that i did know my style but then i look at other illustrators and i also discover new techniques and i feel overwhelmed as i feel like i got too may ways to turn. So I got this book to help me learn more about myself. I discovered about having an Art well to put ideas in to keep and use when I need. I also am discovering that I need to follow my heart and not to look at too many illustrators as I get too overwhelmed and then think am I good enough? So I am going to try for a while and concentrate on my own work and ideas.

Whilst I was volunteering at the Art gallery on friday I started creating this monster. I used posca pens and felting to get a fur effect.  It was just a cheeky experiment to see how I could use felting material in my illustrations.

Below I created quick shapes with posca pens and then used a biro to make little illustrations out of them. I made some really cute and funny ones some were unsuccessful. I really liked this experiment.

Coloured Pencils and how to use them

Above are some coloured pencil illustrations I did. I loved doing the Iguana. I used promarkers as a base and then coloured pencils on top which worked well. It looks very realistic with the scaly texture. I also like the texture I created for the wool on the sheep using pencil and coloured pencils.        For the puffin it was just done by coloured pencil and I concentrated from a photo to make sure I drawed him as correctly as I could. I enjoy using coloured pencils and they always keep popping up in my art work from time to time. I just need to experiment with them more to get better at using them as I like to think I create good illustrations with them.

When I turned the page over in my sketch book the promarker pens had soaked through, so I created this illustration above of an imaginary dragon. I also had a go at realistic sketching various items I had around me.

Learning Perspective

My tutor could see my weakness in perspective and referred me to a book to help me. I have not put it down for thew last three days and I have learnt so much.

I realised where I was going wrong and I didn't understand that the horizon line is always at my eye level and that is stays straight when I am indoors. I have practiced perspective in my sketch book as you can see below and found a few photos to show that I can now understand how to look at perspective views, rooms and objects at various angles and heights. I feel like I have learned a lot and now have a  much better understanding. I also can come back to my note making in my sketchbook if I ever need to to refresh my memory along the way.
